Did you know that:
Apples have a low glycemic index.
As per the Canadian Diebetic Association, food with low glycemic index can help control glycemia,
cholesterol level and help regulate appetite and reduce the risk of developing a heart condition or type 2 diabete.
So, eat them all year round !
A good harvest, takes preparation! In order to produce quality fruits and in quantity, many operations must be done throughout the year.
Winter pruning ( February to April) :
Helps the frame development of a young tree and/or renew fruit production from grown trees.
Planting (April / May) :
Helps replenish dead trees or the complete renewal of a periodic block of the orchard.
Planting of dwarf trees offers many advantages, whether managing the field operations, or the impact on the environment,
but it requires more investments and needs extra maintenance.
Pollination (May) :
A good fertilization of the flower increases the yield, quality, retention and preservation of the fruits.
This is why we hire the services of a beekeeper in our area to install hives in our orchard during the flowering season.
Thinning (June / July) :
Consist in removing a certain number of fruits in order to balance the charge of the tree, to enhance the fruit calibration and maintain its uniformity from one year to another. ( Avoid alternance)
Summer pruning ( June / July) :
Consist in pruning mainly the current season's growth in order to control the vegetative vigor and enhance the color of the fruits.
Harvest (August to October) :
To ensure that the apple is picked and preserved in optimal conditions, many tests for maturity have to be made
to help determine the harvest dates of each block. Picking the fallen fruits before the end of the season is the first mean to control pest, parasites and rodents.
General maintenance of the orchard ( Year round) :
Whether it is for the maintenance of the machinery or the harvesting equipment, phytosanitary treatments, lawn mowing,
repair of the farm's roads, protection against rodents and deers, preparation of the land before the plantation,
installation of stakes on dwarf trees, irrigation systems or simply getting technical formation, the orchard provides us work all year round!
